I am a machinist/model maker. I will try do describe what that is. Everyone knows what a machinist is. They are people who are given drawings, some material, and are asked to make things. A model maker is someone who is given a rough idea of what someone wants and is asked to fill in the blanks as well as they can. From that information we are asked to create operating prototypes. This can be either a lot of fun, or VERY hard work. There is no in between. We work HARD when we need to get a project done. When we are not working, we spend our time fishing, sailing, playing with pets, working in the garden, traveling. How does someone learn to do this? I am not a typical example. I believe in the school of hard knocks. I have been everything from a Post secondary math and computer teacher to a ditch digger and everything in between. I get to use all my past experiences in my job. Yes even the ditch digging. We are a self-starting company. If you cannot schedule your own jobs to get done when you promised them, you will not be able to keep up with all that is required of you. To see how we start with a project, and work thru it, follow this link. It may give you an idea of what we do, and how we do it.
For most of the part we use this machine from Haas and Pro-Engineer from Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC). |
